Prosecutors say Sam Bankman-Fried lied under oath on the witness stand. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn closing arguments for Sam Bankman-Fried's criminal trial Wednesday, prosecutors say the disgraced cryptocurrency mogul repeatedly lied on the witness stand. Prosecutors allege Bankman-Fried defrauded millions of FTX customers by stealing their deposits and using them for Alameda. He used the money, prosecutors say, for personal investments, to repay loans, in extravagant advertising, to buy properties around the world, and for political donations. The stress of the scheme left a key executive 'suicidal for days'Nishad Singh testified against his former boss in court. Jane Rosenberg/ReutersNishad Singh, the head engineer at FTX, testified against Bankman-Fried and spoke to the intense pressure of the scheme. As customers began to withdraw their deposits, FTX didn't have enough liquid cash to actually give them their funds. Instead of working together to solve the issue, executives blamed each other, Singh testified. "In response, Sam said something like, 'We were bulletproof last year, but we're not bulletproof this year,'" Yedidia testified.

Sam Bankman-Fried's defense attorneys have argued that FTX's collapse is complicated and he didn't know everything. AdvertisementAdvertisementDuring opening statements at Sam Bankman-Fried's trial, it quickly became clear that prosecutors and his defense attorneys had very different approaches. But Bankman-Fried's attorneys may convince jurors that Bankman-Fried genuinely believed his actions were acceptable in the wild-west cryptocurrency industry. The challenge for Bankman-Fried's attorneys is to convince jurors that he didn't know about any wrongdoing. "Sam directed me to," Ellison testified.

Prosecutors say Sam Bankman-Fried is trying to discredit Caroline Ellison by leaking her diary entries. Bankman-Fried wants to make her look like a "jilted lover," prosecutors wrote in a court filing. Prosecutors say Bankman-Fried gave "a misleading patina of legitimacy" to an effort to discredit Ellison in the case. "The fact that the defendant funneled this material through the New York Times, rather than directly commenting on the documents himself, is particularly pernicious," prosecutors wrote. The material risked tainting the jury pool and could deter other potential witnesses from testifying at the trial, prosecutors wrote.

FTX customer funds were comingled with Alameda since the beginning of the exchange's inception, according to a recent CFTC complaint. When Alameda's external loans were called in, FTX customer funds were used to cover the debts. The complaint also alleges Bankman-Fried, his parents, and some employees used customer funds for personal purchases and loans. Under the direction of Bankman-Fried, FTX customer funds were further used to cover the debt. It has also become clear that the flashy ad and sports campaigns were funded by customer deposits.
